Avalanche Awareness

The Avalanche Awareness course is an introductory level course and is the first step to gaining an appreciation of the avalanche phenomenon and what is required to make decisions about personal safety when travelling in avalanche terrain. This course is delivered in two parts, theory and practical.

 

The course will introduce participants to the complex phenomena of avalanches and provide introductory training for Skiers, trans alpine trampers and climbers.

Course Outline

Pre-trip planning, evidence based decision making (Avalanche Assessment Card), and field companion rescue knowledge and skills.

 

The course is delivered in two parts:

  • Evening Class (2 Hrs). Introductions, Course outline, Safety and pre trip planning, Avalanche forecasting, and Web resources.
  • Practical Day (8 Hrs). Equipment check and safety brief, Pre-trip avalanche information, Visit ski patrol, Transceiver searching, digging and probe techniques, Snow profile, Safe travel and Route selection.
